QUILTS
Quilts are at the foundation of my love for textiles. I am including some quilts that are in process now and some I made for my children and other special babies in my life. I identify with the Hmong idea of protection through ornament, that symbolically a very involved piece distracts the bad omens or spirits. This primal urge to protect and be engulfed in beauty lives in me as I create things for the people in my life. Quilt patterns appear and influence my collages, rugs and drawings and so I have included a log cabin quilt that I started when I was a child as well as an embroidered quilt that I began as a teenager and finished for one of my daughters. Quilts are the container of our stories through fabric, patchwork gives materials new life. As my own children have children and their friends are starting families I have been making quilts for them and collaborating with my partner John to gift them in a beautiful wooden box as a keepsake box. See two of these boxes below.
