ECO PRINTING

After many years of dyeing with natural dyes I had the chance to study with India Flint in 2013 and again in 2017. These experiences reinvigorated the forager in me and reminded me of the hidden colors and bounty within plants. I incorporate this technique of direct printing from plants and leaves onto fabric and see so much potential. I am exploring ways of using the cloth as lining for my bags, making garments as well as a base for quilting and embroidering. The element of surprise and serendipitous patterns emerging from the dye pot is a process filled with joy. It is also a connection to the plants of a particular area and the seasons. There are other examples of my eco-printing in the quilt section and also in mending as a way to revive old garments.

I walk. And I look. Often I am looking at the ground. I pick up what I find.

  • leaves from the eucalyptus that yield a myriad of color ranging from orange to deep reds, grayish purples, golden colors and pale coral

  • twigs, seedpods and peeled bark yield dye

  • scraps of metal influence color and act as mordants
