COLLAGE
So much of my work falls under this category, however there was a period when I returned from England in the late 70s when I didn't have a studio, so I made smaller pieces that I could carry with me to work on. I collected remnants of paper and fabric and stitched them together as one would make quilt pieces. I did this to make sense of the barrage of imagery that was coming at me. This practice continued even after I had studio space and has taken many forms including collaging onto furniture, and my mended, patched pieces are like fabric collages.
In the late 70s and early 80s it was the height of the "mail art" era and color Xerox was just beginning to take hold. I was experimenting with soft postcards made from fabric and paper and incorporating color transfers into my textile work. I see the sewn worlds as a dimensional collage, made from fragments of weaving and cast off threads and scraps some sewn tightly into little globes, others loose like the opening of a flower.
