BANDHANI

When asked to teach an online dye class by Dr. Elena Phipps at UCLA during the pandemic, I pondered, what would be exciting and relevant to the students. Here I used mostly (with the exception of indigo), dyes that are readily available through most markets. I made dye baths from avocado pits, onion skins, eucalyptus with no mordant and with iron, pomegranate skins, and over-dyed with indigo. Many wonderful variations, textures, and colors resulted using the hand tied Habitai silk Bandhani shawls from Maiwa in Vancouver. To untie the little reserved areas was like opening tiny little gifts.
