HEADS EXHIBIT

June 8 - August 31, 2025
Art Division Gallery

I was invited to participate in Heads, a presentation of portraiture in various media, curated by Luis Serrano and Dan McCleary for Art Division. The curators took their inspiration from the Head-On/The Modern Portrait show curated at MOMA by Chuck Close. The theme of the head reoccurs throughout my work, so I was invited, and I was one of the only artists working in a textile medium. I wondered what specifically I would create. Then, the face emerged. It was supposed to be a quick sketch for a demo for a group of teachers who wanted to see my sewn rug technique. The face was filled with such sorrow, confusion, empathy and bewilderment. As I worked on it, I asked the questions, “Who is this?” and “What face is it?” Then words came to me: "Are we still human?" "This has to stop." and "Ceasefire." The anguish over the genocide in Gaza has not allowed silence, How do we not speak out? Impossible!

A week before the Head Show opened at Art Division, I had a dream.
I dreamed that one of the curators, Luis Serrano, asked me to make t-shirts for the show.
I replied, “It’s only a week away. How will I do it?” He said, “It can be very simple.” End of dream.
That morning after I woke, I started looking for a t-shirt to embellish and I found an old linen shift. I began embroidering and I wore it to the show. See below.
